London – Wednesday, 7th August 2024 – Kaluza, a leading energy software business, today announces the launch of Kaluza Japan, a joint venture to localise and expand Kaluza’s pioneering platform for energy retailers and auto companies in the Japanese market.

Kaluza Japan will combine Kaluza’s advanced operating system and energy optimisation technology with Mitsubishi Corporation’s extensive experience and deep market knowledge. Japan’s energy market boasts a large and sophisticated customer base and strong growth of renewables and electric vehicles (EVs). By delivering personalised offerings, market-leading billing and innovative low-carbon products, Kaluza Japan will enable energy companies to guide their customers towards a cleaner energy system.

The Kaluza platform powers seamless services for millions of customers and optimises over tens of thousands of smart devices, including EVs, to unlock value for retailers and their customers across the UK, US, Australia and beyond. This includes pioneering the world’s first and largest domestic rollout of bidirectional vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technology in the UK that allows EV drivers to charge at cheaper times and earn money by selling surplus energy back to the grid. Kaluza has developed a rich partner ecosystem of automakers, such as Mitsubishi Motors, Porsche, Volkswagen Group and Volvo, as well as some of the world’s largest energy retailers including OVO in the UK and AGL in Australia.

Kaluza recently announced that it has been selected by AGL as its cornerstone partner for driving AGL’s retail transformation so that it can bring more affordable, low carbon solutions to its customers and accelerate Australia’s transition to net zero. The partnership also saw AGL acquire a 20% stake in Kaluza with an investment of US$100 million, positioning Kaluza as the software partner of choice for energy retailers.

From its new Tokyo headquarters, Kaluza Japan will build on the existing strategic partnership between Mitsubishi Corporation and Kaluza, strengthening their collaboration and work with established partners Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (MMC) and MC Retail Energy (MCRE), in addition to advancing a strong pipeline of deployments.

Mitsubishi Corporation’s Seiya Konagaya has been appointed to lead the operation as CEO in Kaluza Japan’s new Tokyo office and Kaluza’s Julian Yao will spearhead the entity’s product development as Chief Product Officer.

Masanori Kohama, Division COO at Mitsubishi Corporation commented:

“With increasing renewables penetration coinciding with a shift towards EVs and hybrid vehicles, Japan is ready to embrace innovative energy management solutions. We’re proud to be partnering with Kaluza to deliver the solutions that we know energy utilities are looking for. Kaluza’s flexible architecture and global experience makes it extremely adaptable to a complex market like Japan and we’re excited for what’s in store.”

Jonathan Levy, Managing Director of US & Japan at Kaluza commented:

“We are delighted to announce the launch of Kaluza Japan as Mitsubishi Corporation and Kaluza expand our work together in this critical market. Kaluza Japan will leverage the innovative capabilities of Kaluza and the long-established expertise of Mitsubishi Corporation to enable energy companies in the region to unlock unique low-carbon propositions for customers in a way that is clean, convenient and consumer-centric.”
