Kaluza unlocks up to $450 yearly savings for OVO Energy Australia customers through rapid innovation

Melbourne – 29th May, 2024 – Kaluza, a leading energy software business, and energy challenger OVO Energy Australia (OEA) today announce the launch of innovative EV and solar propositions. Powered by Kaluza, these new EV charging offerings allow OEA to share value with its customers and engage them in the energy transition.

Through a series of innovative propositions, all launched in less than one month, Kaluza is enabling OEA customers to save up to $450 a year. These features automate EV charging load shifting, helping customers receive benefits from the grid and their own rooftop solar system.

High solar generation during early afternoons, particularly in the summer, has created challenges across the energy value chain. That’s why OEA turned to Kaluza to enable the build and launch of propositions that encourage customers to shift their usage, save money and get on a path to electrification.

Through the Kaluza-powered ‘Free 3’ plan, OEA now offers their customers (including EV drivers) three hours of free energy daily, encouraging load shifting to periods when solar generation is at its peak. Launched in just 19 days, this plan has initially resulted in more than a 30% increase in energy consumption during the designated free hours, allowing customers to capture excess solar energy on the grid.

In addition to the ‘Free 3’ plan, Kaluza and OEA have introduced a smart charging software solution accessible to EV drivers. Customers with Tesla EVs now have access to ‘EV Control’ features to monitor and manage charging in real-time, optimising schedules for the cheapest and greenest times. Solar customers can also link their EV charging to maximise consumption from the locally generated electricity via connecting to their inverter or entering their solar system parameters.

Kaluza, with its constantly growing portfolio of connected devices, is enabling OEA customers to get the most value out of low carbon technologies working in unison in their home. For example, EV customers with solar panels can meet 15-25% of their charging needs directly from their solar energy systems, cutting reliance on the grid and lowering electricity expenses.

In 2021, AGL and OVO Energy announced a joint venture to bring innovative digital energy services to Australia through the Kaluza platform. Following the successful migration of OVO Energy Australia customers to Kaluza and the complete localisation of the platform last year, Kaluza and OEA were then prepared to rapidly introduce innovative low-carbon propositions to the market this year.

Gavin Mooney, General Manager for Australia at Kaluza commented:

“We’re proud to have partnered with OEA to build a flexible technology platform capable of launching these innovative EV and solar plans. Such adaptable solutions signal the future, bolstering customers, energy retailers and the sustainability of the energy grid. We look forward to continuing our rapid innovation work with OEA to seize new energy market opportunities and increase customer loyalty.”

Mark Yemm, CEO of OVO Energy Australia commented:

“Kaluza has allowed us to quickly launch innovative propositions, designed for the modern energy customer. These offerings have enabled us to maintain a competitive edge, mitigate increased volatility and reward our customers with low-carbon solutions that also help save them money.”
