London – Kaluza, the intelligent software platform powering the future of energy, today announces winning the award for ‘Innovation of the Year’ at this year’s BusinessGreen ceremony for its role in the world’s largest domestic vehicle-to-grid (V2G) deployment led by OVO Energy.
Despite impressive competition, the panel of experts adjudicating the BusinessGreen awards were impressed by Kaluza’s innovative bidirectional smart charging solution, which unlocks the power of electric vehicles to enable a greener, more resilient energy system.
Using AI and machine learning, Kaluza intelligently manages the charging of V2G devices by analysing real-time market signals (such as grid supply, weather and pricing data), and charging cars when prices and carbon levels are low. Kaluza-enabled V2G allows cars to store energy and export it back into the grid when local electricity demand increases. At scale, this means that cars can be used as a giant smart battery for the nation, supporting and balancing the grid when supply is low.
So far, over 3 million free miles made available to OVO customers who exported energy back to the grid during peak times. The project has also shown that V2G has the potential to save £3.5bn per year on grid infrastructure reinforcement, and that customers can earn from £350-£450 to as much as £800 per year without needing to do anything except keep their cars plugged in when they are not in use.
