Energy software business, Kaluza, today announces winning ‘Smart Tech Project’ in this year’s National Technology Awards at a ceremony in London last night.
The award was won for the platform’s innovative electric vehicle smart charging capabilities, specifically its work in optimising bidirectional charging in the world’s first and largest residential vehicle-to-grid (V2G) programme.
Kaluza’s algorithms optimised over 330 V2G devices across the UK enabling customers to charge at the cheapest and greenest times, and sell surplus energy back to the grid. In total, customers earned up to £800 per year without needing to do anything except keep their cars plugged in when they were not in use. Kaluza successfully shifted 2.19 GWh of energy and proved the potential of V2G to save £3.5bn per year on grid infrastructure reinforcement while saving 46.7 tonnes of CO2.
This year, Kaluza is partnering with Volkswagen Group UK, OVO Energy and Indra on INFLEXION, the world’s first vehicle-to-everything (V2X) trial using the Combined Charging System protocol. The INFLEXION consortium builds on the foundational programme to develop propositions that harness the full potential of V2X charging for customers, helping to lower the total cost of EV ownership and maximise the impact on grid balancing and decarbonisation.
Valts Grintals, Product Marketing Lead at Kaluza, commented: “Electric vehicle smart charging, including bi-directional V2G, offers huge potential for decarbonisation, and for utilities and automakers to bring new, rewarding EV propositions for customers. We are honoured to have won this award and are excited to be building on this valuable work through INFLEXION to truly unlock the full power of this technology.”
