London and Tokyo – Mitsubishi Corporation, the largest diversified trading company in the world, and Kaluza, the leading intelligent energy platform, today announce a partnership to develop a new suite of products and services that enable energy utilities and auto manufacturers in Japan to reward customers for switching to electric vehicles (EVs).

Leveraging Mitsubishi Corporation’s extensive industry experience and network across power and mobility, together with Kaluza’s proven intelligent grid software, the partnership will aim to create a new commercial ecosystem for smart, low carbon EV solutions. Powered by Kaluza, these solutions – including EV leasing and financing, insurance, energy, public charging access and smart charging at home – will seek to revolutionise the experience for millions of customers transitioning to EVs, increasing adoption and accelerating Japan’s progress towards carbon neutrality by 2050.

The new offering includes the deployment of Kaluza’s industry-leading smart charging technology that leverages powerful AI and real-time data to intelligently shift car charging to times when demand is low, and energy is cheapest and greenest. As a result, Kaluza enables customers to pay less for their energy while supporting grid balancing and allowing more renewable power to be used instead of fossil fuels. Kaluza will enable widespread access to smart charging through its extensive range of EV integrations, bringing benefits to large swathes of Japanese end customers while maximising support for the energy system.

The collaboration is the first for Kaluza in Japan as it continues to deploy its software internationally. The partnership follows a licensing agreement with AGL Energy, Australia’s largest energy retailer, in March and several partnerships with leading mobility companies in Europe, including Stellantis. In addition to EV solutions, the joint programme will conduct critical research into domestic flexibility and explore new business initiatives centered around in-home smart device optimisation – including batteries and air conditioning units – to further reduce customer costs and carbon emissions.

Scott Neuman, CEO of Kaluza commented:

“With a distinguished track record in mobility and technology innovation, Japan is perfectly placed to turn electric vehicles into a giant distributed battery for the electricity grid. Through Kaluza, this partnership will actively reward the nation’s EV drivers for their role in shaping a smarter, greener and more resilient energy system. We are delighted to be working with Mitsubishi Corporation to bring transport and energy together in a way that benefits both people and the planet.”

Satoru Tamiya, General Manager of Mitsubishi Corporation’s Utility Service Department, commented:

“We aim to make a lasting, positive impact towards achieving carbon neutrality in Japan by combining Kaluza’s cutting-edge technology with Mitsubishi Corporation’s experience across domestic power and mobility sectors.”
